A brief interview with Irene
Graphic- California Poppy
My practice is open to anyone in the midst of a life transition who is looking for honest, grounded emotional support. My doors are particularly open to those contending with:
• Family caregiving
• Life in transition
• Women grappling with fertility issues from conception to menopause
• Gender expectations, particularly for women
• The reality of aging
How would you describe what it feels like to be in a session with you?
I am relaxed and conversational; I might occasionally ask you to pause and reflect on what’s arising in that moment. I hold awareness for when the flow of story is broken by a flash of stronger emotion or is particularly unsettled.
My approach is to show up with genuine presence and a real desire to enter your world and reach out a hand. I am collaborative as I follow your lead.
When the work clicks, it’s almost like the barometric pressure drops in the room. It’s an honor to be present in those times when we’re able to uncover a kernel of truth together.
What drew you to this work specifically?
It’s two-fold. I’ve always been fascinated by interpersonal dynamics, the specifics of someone’s life, and how they dovetail with people’s histories and origin stories.
Growing up I was profoundly struck by the transformation I witnessed in my own family: when my grandmother was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, the longstanding acrimony between my grandfather and my father (rooted in sharp political differences that never shifted) dissolved in the face of my grandmother’s diagnosis and progression. That experience led me to want to support the elderly and their family caregivers.
As I met with clients during the course of my training, I appreciated the opportunity to support and bolster those facing severe life challenges, and to help them realize their own strengths.
Tell us about your training
My training spans a range of clinical settings and client populations. I’ve worked with clients in recovery at a methadone clinic, supported youth at a low-income public high school, and provided counseling to homebound seniors. This experience has given me a broad foundation for working with people across very different life circumstances.
What do you want someone who’s nervous about starting therapy to know before they reach out to you?
I’m 5’2″ and not scary! (Irene laughs). I don’t come with an agenda – I’m here to support you in whatever way you need. I encourage clients to go at their own pace and I help their journey unfold organically.
Working with me is a chance for a confidential sounding board with someone who is on your side and can be honest with you in a way that your friends and family may not.
Diversity and inclusion
As a white, cisgendered woman, I understand that I walk through the world with privilege. It’s important to me to have a practice that is fully open to everyone
